Tata Institute of Social Sciences, a multi campus institution, deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, and a grant-in-aid Institute under Ministry of Education, Government of India, was established in the year 1936.

The School of Skill Education (SSE)

The School of Skill Education was set up in 2012 to spearhead the Institute’s commitment to provide skill education and training to millions of youth in India through appropriately designed industry relevant/market oriented skill educational programmes.
Each of the Bachelor’s programmes is a direct outcome of India’s recognition of the importance of skilling the youth to meet the ‘skilled’ workforce demand of the industries. All the programmes incorporate the skill sector’ specific job roles and their corresponding National Occupational Standards (NOS).
The core vision of the School is to create skill based sustainable income sources for the youth by skilling them in key industrial job competencies that would promote better employability, better livelihood, a brighter future and subsequently contribute to the economy of the nation.
The one of a kind ‘work integrated skill training programme’ adopted by TISS SSE focusing on developing job-specific skills rather than providing only broad knowledge based education is being implemented for the first time in India.

The curriculum is an integration of general education and job-specific knowledge and skills which is transmitted through a blend of taught classes and practical skill training - a unique, distinctive skilling pedagogy brand of TISS SSE emphasizing on holistic education. The on-the-job training (OJT) is conducted at the real shop floor of the booming industries and companies of the skill sector.
The internship embedded ‘work while you learn’ pedagogical process provides students the much needed work-oriented experiential learning and job skills simultaneously, and sometimes an opportunity to earn a modest stipend, while engaging in internship/OJT.

TISS SSE’s Skill Education/Training Model

PROGRAMMES OFFERED

In the academic year 2024-25, the School of Skill Education offers 35 Bachelor Programmes, 6 Diploma Programmes, and 21 Post Graduate Diploma Programmes conforming to UGC guidelines.
The academic-cum-skill progression and certification with multiple entry and multiple exit (ME-ME) pathways of the Bachelor’s programmes is illustrated below

Every individual year of the 3-year Bachelor’s degree programmes is a stand-alone certification aligned with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF)/National Credit Framework (NCrF) at levels 4.5 for the first year, 5 for the second year and 5.5 for the third year, all awarded by TISS SSE and recognized across national and international universities.
Besides, the stand-alone Diploma programmes are provided at NSQF/NCrF levels 5, and the stand-alone Post Graduate Diploma programmes are provided at NSQF/NCrF level 6 (for students holding 3-year degree certificates) and at NSQF/NCrF level 6.5 (for students holding 4-year degree certificates).

Employment readiness

The students are job ready at every exit point. On completion of the programme opted for, a student has broadly 3 career trajectories to choose from, among others- to go for placement or employment, to become entrepreneurs by initiating their own start-ups or pursue higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

1. HSC / equivalent OR
2. SSC 2years of ITI
3. Candidates appearing for their final HSC/equivalent examination can also apply provided they meet the eligibility criteria and upload all the necessary documents at the time of admission. The 10+2 or equivalent examination should have been conducted before the course commencement date.

5. Admission to the programme is "provisional" till all the mandatory documents are submitted by the candidate and the same is verified and approved. If it is found that the candidate is not eligible at any stage after selection/admission/course commencement, the admission to the programme will be cancelled and fees will be refunded as per refund rule clauses
