Logistics
Introduction of the Sector
The logistics sector is a fundamental component of global commerce, enabling the efficient and precise movement of goods from manufacturers to consumers. This industry covers a broad range of activities, including transportation, warehousing, inventory management, and distribution. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment in the transportation and logistics sector is expected to grow by 18% from 2022 to 2032 - significantly faster than the average for all occupations. A primary driver of this growth is the expansion of e-commerce, with global sales anticipated to reach $6.38 trillion by 2024, as reported by Statista.
In response, the demand for advanced logistics infrastructure to handle order fulfillment and delivery management is rising. The sector offers numerous career opportunities, from supply chain analysts to inventory managers, catering to a wide range of skill levels. As businesses continue to scale their operations and adapt to shifting consumer expectations, the logistics industry remains a promising field for employment and career advancement.
BBA in Logistics (Apprenticeship Embeddded Degree Program)
Course Introduction
The Apprenticeship Embedded UG Degree Programme in Logistics (AEDP) is designed by the Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSC), an organisation established by the Government of India. The AEDP is implemented in more than 80 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the country. AEDP provides a one-year stipendiary apprenticeship as part of its curriculum. The Apprenticeship Engagement embedded in the curriculum provides students with on-the-job training, prepares them to be industry-ready, and offers a minimum monthly stipend of ?9,600 during the twelve-month training period. The AEDP, introduced in the academic year 2019-20, has proved to be a very effective degree programme that imparts Knowledge, Attitude, and Skills, making students more confident.
The National Logistics Policy (NLP) estimates that the logistics sector currently employs over 22 million people, with workforce growth projected to be substantial due to policy initiatives, technology adoption, and increasing investments. This figure is expected to grow at a rate of around 5% annually. The sector is poised to add up to one crore (10 million) new jobs by 2027, driven by significant government initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti, GST implementation, multi-modal logistics parks development, expanded infrastructure and digitisation. Human resource development programmes in logistics skills are a core part of the NLP, focused on bridging the gap between educational qualifications and industry skills requirements, thereby improving employability and workforce quality.
The NLP explicitly prioritises the improvement of human resources—both in quantity and quality—by fostering specialised training, upskilling, and the integration of technology into logistics operations. As the nation strives to reduce logistics costs and improve global competitiveness, employment in logistics is expected to percolate beyond metros, expanding opportunities in tier II and III cities. The ongoing investments in infrastructure (logistics parks, multimodal connectivity) and technology (AI, IoT, blockchain) are set to further boost human resource demand within the sector. The Indian logistics sector is not only a major employer today but is set to become an even larger driver of job creation and skilled workforce development through 2030 and beyond.
